Malini Murjani Beth, Handbag of the Day by Luxist

As featured on Luxist.com...

The Malini Murjani Beth, designed by the daughter of Mohan Murjani, comes in two glorious shades of whip snake, DUSK and DAWN (above).

These chic, simple, fabulous Italian-made metal mesh bags are 11" x 6.5" with a 9" drop double brass chain. The metallics are perfect for spring and very easy to wear in these neutral colors -- the Beth could easily become your go-to evening bag.

Malini Murjani just launched her handbag collection in 2000 after graduation from FIT. "Creativity is always at its zenith when it comes from a deeply personal place," she says of her work, which clearly celebrates memories of her past--she was born in India, raised all over Europe and American and calls New York City home. Her collection is chic and charmingly mechanical, with sharp 90 degree angles and details which resemble antique furniture and gadgets.

The Malini Murjani Beth is available from Intermix (back view comes up first, it's the same bag) for $395.00.

HANDBAGO - All things handbags

Designer Profile: Malini Murjani

Several weeks ago we featured Blake Lively carrying the Malini Murjani Celine Hobo and every girl here was swooning over that bag. The Malini Murjani collection is full of beautiful leathers and bold metallics. I reached out to Malini to learn more about her and her collection.

How and when did the Malini Murjani collection get started?
The collection was launched in September of 2000.

What is your signature design style?
My signature design is very culturally influenced and always exotic. I like to infuse tough elements mixed with feminine beauty and soft textures from my choice of hardware to the different textures, leathers, and natural adornments.

Who do you design for (who is the Malini Murjani customer)?
The Malini Murjani customer is a woman that knows her own individual fashion sense. She is self aware, confident, and knows just how to be sexy while maintaining a mysterious edge.

What can you tell us about the latest collection/what's new for next season?
The latest collection, F/W 2010, is really about the colors. I’ve chosen a metallic palette against the vibrant colors that one might find in the deserts of the Mojave. The latest collection shows the appreciation I have for the beauty and allure of natural elements coupled with the seduction and sophistication of the city. I've chosen rich shades of purples, rust, taupe, and grey tones in a myriad of fabrics to complement the transformation of the Earth with the passing seasons. The F/W line is also a nod, or rather a curtsey, to the fabulous first lady of France, Carla Bruni Sarkozy. As a woman of grace, style, sensuality, and unending beauty, Sarkozy is the quintessential renaissance woman, committed to maintaining a keen independence and style that has made her a fashion icon of today. Whether in a pair of faded blue jeans walking the park in Paris or draped in Dior for a dignitary gala, she is the embodiment of the Malini Murjani femme du monde.

What is your best selling piece?
My best selling piece is the “Celine” bag. It comes in about 5 different color combinations with mesh metals and Italian leathers. Once the “Celine” hit the set of Gossip Girl, as seen on Blake Lively, the fashionistas started ambushing their local Intermix stores, and ordering them straight from my website, as well. It was a frenzy!

What sets Malini Murjani bags apart?
I believe what sets my bags apart, is that they are not reliant on the label. They are distinguished by the quality and uniqueness of each individual piece, based on the craftsmanship, the quality of materials used, and the distinguishing embellishments that adorn them. My bags can stand alone, as the ultimate accessory. I get so excited when I see a girl carrying one of my creations wearing nothing but a crisp white tee, skinny jeans, and killer heels. It’s just how I envisioned seeing my bags on the streets, made for the confident fashion maven..Insta-chic!!
